Edwin Jagger DE89BA

Background: Age 56/cartridge shaver from the start, 2 blades up to 5 blades.
I did get a close shave from my cartridge razors but the three things that made me try a switch. 1. I could only shave twice a week without skin irritation. If I shave 3 or more times my skin gets tore up and I do need to shave multiple times per week some months out of the year. 2. The price of razor blades just keep rising. 3. Cartridge quality is not consistent at all. Some lasted twice as long as others. This led to more unexpected skin irritation.
I was really getting sick of shaving and wanted to try a new system, so I started looking at “entry level” DE razors. The Edwin Jagger DE89BA was recommended. I purchased it with a Gillette blade aggressive level of 3.5/5. My 1st shave was amazing. It’s a totally different feeling. I did get a small nick on the 1st shave, but it was because I was shaving like I was using cartridges, too much pressure. After that, no more nicks. Sites will state that there is a learning curve, but it’s a pretty easy curve. I’m new to DE, but I’ve been shaving my whole life so it’s an easy hurdle. I put the DE89BA to the test shaving 4 day growth one week then shaving every other day the next week. I used different blades at 3.5/5 aggressive level. It passed A+. PROs: It’s smooth and easy to use, good looking razor, skin feels much better, easy to clean. CONs: I can’t really think of any.
I was so excited about my new shaving routine that I purchased the Edwin Jagger 3ONE6 Stainless Steel. I’ll post a review for this razor after a few more shaves, but so far it’s looking excellent. I’ll keep the DE89BA in the rotation, possible with a different blade than the 3ONE6.

Jagger Double Edge Razor

An excellent piece of hardware! I used a double edge razor as a young man, and then got caught up in the disposable razor trap. Now I am back on board with getting a proper shave! This Jagger razor has nice heft, which makes for a perfect shave.

Wonderful razor and experience

What a well built and great looking razor! The chrome finish and design looks great. Good hold and weight makes the shave smooth. Even though this does not have butterfly blade type of blade replacement mechanism, it’s still easy to replace blade as long as you are careful. Cleaning is quick and easy. I have sensitive skin where body reacts to slightest cuts. The sensitive pack of blades are great. I am still learning to avoid cuts below chin but I am almost there! I stopped using Mach-3 years ago due to the sensitive skin and had moved to electric/battery shavers. While they worked well, close shave was not an option. This razor and DE blades now let me have that :) Now I know why my grandpa did not give up on DE razors :-D This Edwin Jagger razor is highly recommended. Thanks to videos here that made me switch.

Great started DE razor!

Based on recommendations, have this as my first DE razor + sample blades. Good weight, easy first shave. No irritation afterwards, unlike w/ my disposables!

Beautiful

A beautiful razor. I use this with a polsilver blade and shaves great. This is my second DE razor and will be using it for a long time. This is very mild on my irritation prone skin. A 2 pass shave with this leaves me mostly stubble free. A third pass leaves my neck and jaw line irritated. The knurling on the handle is subtle but i don't find it hard to hold or slippery. Lather and hair is easily rinsed out with a little water. Very happy with this razor.

Very pleased

I've been using a Merkur 23c which I really liked, but this one seems even better and it's workmanship is nicer. Very easy to handle and excellent shaves. I used Derby Extra blades the first few times and they were just right for me-not a single nick. Then, I made what turned out to be a mistake and tried a Feather-it was too sharp and aggressive for me. It butchered my face, a lot of nicks. So, it's back to Derby and I think that's where I'll stay!

Very good for sensitive skin

It takes some getting use too and requires more skill in using it, as opposed to the traditional raisers that are used today. But once you get the hang of it, the safety raiser is a very efficient tool that does not leave any cuts or raiser burns when shaving. I find that I am breaking out less and less due to using only one blade and not 3 to 5 blades, that I believed was causing the breakouts.

Head screw broke before I got to use it

After taking the razor out of the box, I unscrewed the head to place a blade inside. The screw broke off before I even got a chance to use the razor. It appears to me that the alloy used in making the screw is not strong enough and should not be used in making a man's shaving razor. It should be able to withstand the rigors of shaving... pulling, twisting, or even being dropped in the sink, A $50.00 razor should last a lifetime.

I will be returning this razor broken...and still unused.

Good razor

Good weight and does what it needs to do. I wish the website would list all of the "starter" razors together so people have a better idea of what to first buy.

First DE Razor

I'm 50+ and this is my first DE Razor. I did a lot of research online and the Jagger DE89 kept coming up as a very good entry level razor. Since I live in Phoenix I decided to check it out in person.
I compared 3 razors WSP , DE 89, IKON Shavecraft 101. I'm glad I was able to hold each one and compare side by side.
After asking questions, taking them apart, putting a blade in each of them etc. I settled on DE89. Fit, finish and feel is top notch. The weight was noticeable - heavier than the WSP but not has heavy as the IKON. Price was in between the other two.
After using it for a week, I found the handle to be slippery. My solution was to use shrink tubing on the handle. That got rid of the slippery and allowed me to use a looser grip to let the weight of the razor do the work. I am now very satisfied with my DE89.
I get a better shave with the DE89 than with a cartridge or disposable. However, I spend a lot more time prep'ing, lathering and shaving passes
I'm having a ball refining my technique, using different blades, soaps, brush combinations.
I look forward to shaving each morning where before it was a non-event, get 'er done chore.

Excellent razor with just the right weight

Having tried the Merkur 34C HD already and being impressed with the closeness of the have I was even more interested in trying out the Edwin Jagger. It really impressed, its lighter than the 34C and gives a close shave but I would recommend you try out other blades than the Derby's that come provided. They can be very unforgiving if you have sensitive skin, I'd recommend you find a blade that suits you. The blades I used were the Polsilver Super Iridium. Overall I'd recommend this razor as its very well put together and feels nice in the hand.
