WHAT WE DO

Our Straight Razor Restoration Service is the perfect solution for daily shavers and heirloom razors alike. Whether you want a shave-ready straight razor or museum quality keepsake, we are committed to preserving history and helping you get the most from your wet shave experience.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Each razor is assessed for its specific needs. To safely remove afflicted metal during polishing, our team uses specialized compounds and rouges. Our experienced staff, safely maintain the integrity of your steel while buffing and polishing your razor and scales to look their best. This process removes pitting, rust, patina and damage, leaving the metal clean and hygienic.
  • We work to restore and preserve the original handles (scales) and will polish them to look their best. However, scales that have been contributing to rusting the blade are now removed and replaced with handcrafted custom scales designed by you if need be. Our website makes ordering custom scales easy by standardizing shapes, materials, and cost. Just select your options above and get a preview of what your straight razor will look like.
  • For that close shave, razors now move on to the sharpening process wherein our in-house Hone-Meister Eric takes them through an individualized stone progression. With an easel of over 12 stones to choose from; natural to synthetic, coticule to Chosera, exotic Japanese stones like Naniwa to tried and true performers like Norton, we have everything needed to give you the keenest edge you’ve ever experienced.

WHY IT MATTERS

Our Straight Razor Restoration Service was created with two purposes in mind: the everyday shaver that wants clean steel, beautiful custom scales, and the sharpest shaving edge; as well as the family heirloom straight razor, ready to be passed down to future generations, perfectly preserved in museum quality condition.

POLISHING BREAKDOWN

We offer two different polishing options so your razor can return home exactly how you intend!

Polish: light metal removal using polishing wheels only. Removes active rust, minor imperfections in blade like honing scratches, restores shine.

Re-Grind and Polish: Each razor must be individually evaluated. Regrind and Polish removes a good amount of metal through grinding wheels. Good for razors in really bad shape. Removes as many imperfections as possible without changing the razors over all shape. Note, any etchings on the blade face will not survive a regrind.

    Not quite there

I had Razor Emporium hone up a vintage near-wedge razor I purchased on Ebay. The edge looked really good, even under a loup. However, the shave really wasn't there. I ended up stropping on paste and running a few passes on my IRL hone to make it through a few shaves. And it really didn't hold very long. Maybe wedges just aren't their strong suit.

    Very good, but...

Overall, I'm very happy with how the blade of my 1820s/1830s Wade & Butcher came back to me. I asked for a hone, polishing, and new scales. The hone being the most important part, that came back great. The edge isn't quite as sharp as I think I need for my very coarse beard, but I'll know to ask for an insanely sharp edge next time. The polishing didn't come close to removing as much tarnish as I thought it would. I did a lot of the work ahead of time with a series of wet/dry sandpaper and some elbow grease, but the blade came back looking cosmetically identical to what I sent in. Perhaps my expectations were too high? Perhaps it really needed a regrind? I'm not super thrilled with the scales. I asked for cocobolo wood, which I've seen polished to a high shine before. The scales that came back seemed hardly finished, as if they'd come off the sanding wheel of a moderate grit, been wiped down, and called "good enough." They're not rough, but they're not smooth, either. They feel untreated, and somewhat cheap. Also, the peening seems incomplete. The pins stick out much farther than I would like, and have rough, sharp edges. It wouldn't have been too much effort to peen them slow and steady to round off the edges. I'm sorry to say, also, that the blade edge comes dangerously close to the side of the scale when closing, and won't close straight and centered. Again, I'm overall happy because the blade edge was treated very well. It's functional, but the overall "feel" of the job is rushed and cheap. The Razor Emporium folks have always done a great job, and I'm always appreciative of their hard work, but I think just the mark on this one. N.B.: It's not going to stop my using their services!

    Great service

Sent in my razor to be honed . It was returned quickly and was not only hone but oiled as well. The shave is like it was new

    Amazing Work

I bought an old (1930's) straight razor at an antique store and had Eric at Razor Emporium refurbish it. He did a fantastic job. The blade looks great, The bevel's mirror finish is flawless, even with a 30X jeweler's loupe and it shaves wonderfully. I'm looking forward to my next restoration project.
